Hospitality wallcovering specification is governed by code as much as taste. Six data-sheet items determine whether a paper can be installed in a guest corridor, a restaurant, or a meeting room.
1. Type II commercial weight (minimum)
20-28 oz/lin yd. This is the residential vs commercial dividing line — anything lighter is excluded from public-area corridors by most North American hospitality specs.
2. ASTM E84 flammability Class A
Flame spread under 25, smoke developed under 50. Class A is required by code in most commercial corridors, lobbies, and assembly spaces.
3. Scrub resistance (ASTM D2486)
Specify a minimum of 300 scrub cycles for restaurants, 200 for guest rooms. Below those numbers the paper visibly degrades within a year.
4. Stain resistance
Topcoat must shed coffee, wine, and cleaning chemicals tested per ASTM F1571. Specify the test, not just the marketing claim.
5. Antimicrobial treatment
Standard in most current hospitality specs — confirm the treatment uses a registered EPA antimicrobial, not just a marketing label.
6. Warranty terms
Reputable commercial mills offer 10-year warranties against fading, delamination, and seam failure. If the warranty is silent on any of those three, choose a different paper.
