Kitchen Wallpaper Ideas: Adding Personality to Your Culinary Space

Where wallpaper actually belongs in a kitchen — and the four installation choices that let it survive a working cooking space.

Kitchen wallpaper is back, but not where it used to be. Today's installations live in breakfast nooks, pantry interiors, ceilings, and walls above wainscoting — zones outside the splash radius of the cooktop and sink.

    Use vinyl in working zones

Within 1.5 m of the cooktop, sink, or dishwasher, only specify a Type II vinyl with sealed seams. Anywhere else, residential non-wovens are fine.

Breakfast nooks are the sweet spot

A papered breakfast nook gives the kitchen its visual reward without putting the paper anywhere near grease. Wrap three walls plus the ceiling for the strongest effect.

Pantry interiors are the overlooked move

Walk-in pantries paint with the kitchen but read separately when the door opens. A bold pattern here costs little material and never gets criticised.

    Open-shelf back walls

Removing upper cabinets in favour of open shelves backed by wallpaper is one of the most-requested kitchen renovations of 2026. Use a vinyl, install behind a 1 cm air gap to the shelves, and you have a cleanable, dramatic backdrop.
