A wallpaper that is safe for a nursery is one that does not off-gas measurable VOCs into a small enclosed room. Four spec-sheet details tell you whether a paper qualifies.
1. PVC-free or low-PVC vinyl
Standard vinyl wallcoverings contain phthalates that off-gas slowly. Specify PVC-free non-woven or paper backings, or vinyls explicitly labelled phthalate-free.
2. Water-based inks
Confirm the print process uses water-based or UV-cured inks. Solvent-based inks continue to release VOCs for months after installation.
3. Formaldehyde-free adhesives
The paste matters as much as the paper. Specify a wheat-paste or methylcellulose adhesive, never a urea-formaldehyde based product.
4. Greenguard Gold or comparable certification
This is the single fastest filter. Greenguard Gold is tested specifically for use in schools and childcare environments — if a paper holds the certification, all four points above are already verified.
