Dining Room Wallpaper Ideas: Creating a Memorable Dinner Party Atmosphere

How to use wallpaper to engineer a dining room that flatters guests, candlelight, and the table itself.

The dining room is the one room in the house most likely to be lit by candles. That single fact should drive every wallpaper decision.

    Specify for candlelight, not daylight

Saturated reds, deep greens, warm umbers, and metallic grounds all bloom under candlelight while cool greys and bright whites go grey. Pick the paper in a candlelit sample review, not under fluorescent showroom light.

    Texture amplifies the flicker

Grasscloth, embroidered silks, and metallic-ground papers catch flame light in a way flat papers can't. The walls become part of the table setting.

    Wrap, don't accent

A dining room with a single accent wall reads as casual. A dining room wrapped on all four walls reads as a destination. This is one of the few rooms in the house where the full wrap is almost always the right answer.

Pull the trim from the paper

Paint chair rail, baseboard, and door casings in a colour pulled directly from the wallpaper. White trim against a saturated dining-room paper looks like an afterthought.
