Panoramic Murals for the Dining Room: A Complete Styling Guide

How to size, hang, and pair a panoramic mural in a dining room — including which wall takes the panel and how to handle the other three.

A panoramic dining-room mural is the most committed move in residential wallcovering. Done right, it becomes the family's defining heirloom; done wrong, it dominates the room badly.

    Which wall takes the panel

The wall facing the room's main entry. Guests walk in and the mural orients the entire room. Side walls and the wall behind the host's seat both compete with the conversation.

Sizing the panel to the wall

Measure the wall, subtract the chair-rail and baseboard heights, and order panels that exceed the remaining height by 10 cm on each side for trim. Most panoramic suppliers offer custom heights — use them.

    Handling the three other walls

Paint the other walls in the mural's quietest background colour. Wallpaper on a second wall competes; flat paint in a pulled colour disappears and lets the panel work.

    Lighting the mural

Two adjustable wall washers angled at 30° from each upper corner reveal the brushwork without bleaching the colours. Skip a single dedicated picture light — murals are too wide for one fixture.
