A narrow hallway has three problems: it feels tight, it feels short, and the lighting is usually inadequate. Wallpaper can fix all three.
Vertical pattern raises the ceiling
A pattern with subtle vertical movement — stripes (if narrow), trailing florals, vertical trellis — draws the eye upward. The ceiling reads as higher than it measures.
Pale value widens the walls
A wallpaper in the upper third of the value scale (LRV above 60) reflects light and widens the apparent corridor. Dark hallway papers work only when the lighting is excellent and the hall is short.
Mirror placement multiplies the effect
A single large mirror on one long wall doubles the apparent width. Two mirrors facing each other read as gimmicky.
Avoid
- Horizontal stripes — they widen by shortening
- Heavy dark florals on both walls
- Pattern with strong diagonal movement
