A feature wall succeeds or fails on three decisions made before the first roll is unwrapped: which wall, what scale, and how it terminates at the edges. Get those right and almost any pattern will work.
Pick the wall the eye already lands on
Walk into the room from its main doorway and notice where your eye stops. That is the wall to paper. In most living rooms it is the wall behind the largest sofa, the wall framing the fireplace, or the wall opposite the entry. Papering a side wall the eye skips over reads as a misfire even if the pattern is beautiful.
Scale the pattern to the wall
Measure the wall before browsing samples. A wall under 3 m wide takes a small-to-medium repeat (15-40 cm). A wall over 4 m can carry a large repeat (60-130 cm) — and usually needs one, or the wall looks busy. The single most common mistake is choosing a small repeat for a large wall.
Plan the edges
A feature wall needs a clean termination on each side. The cleanest options are: (1) an inside corner with the adjacent walls in a paint pulled from the wallpaper's ground colour, (2) a flanking pair of bookcases that hide the cut edges, or (3) a full-height trim piece. Cuts that die into mid-wall always look unresolved.
Pull two paint colours from the paper
Use the wallpaper's dominant background as the adjacent wall paint and the strongest pattern accent for the trim or ceiling. Two paints pulled from the paper itself create the cohesion an isolated feature wall otherwise lacks.
