How Designer Wallpaper Defines the Identity of a Boutique Hotel

Case studies and design principles for using wallpaper as a boutique hotel's primary brand-expression surface.

In a boutique hotel, walls do more brand work than logos. A signature wallcovering repeated through corridors, guestrooms, and key public areas becomes the property's most-photographed and most-remembered design element.

Choose one signature paper, then variants

The strongest boutique programs use one hero paper in lobbies and main corridors and a coordinated palette of supporting papers in guestrooms. Guests register the consistency without being able to name it.

    Commission, don't just specify

Many of the most successful boutique hotels commission a custom colourway of an existing pattern from Cole & Son, Pierre Frey, or de Gournay. The custom colourway becomes a brand asset no competitor can copy.

    Design the photograph

Every boutique room ends up on Instagram. Choose wallcoverings that photograph cleanly from typical guest angles — sitting on the bed, standing at the desk — not just from the architect's elevation drawings.
