The Empire Way — Seven Universal Rules to Hang Papier peint Right (Almost) Every Time
Matière, marque, and project specifics vary — but a century of installations at Empire has distilled the craft into seven universal rules. Follow them and you'll land a clean, professional papier peint installation roughly nine times out of ten.

Measure your roll with breathing pièce.
Trim each drop to the wall height plus a 1-inch overhang at the top and 1-inch overhang at the bottom. That margin absorbs ceiling drift and baseboard variation.

Cut your first drop and lay it on the floor.
Always dry-cut and lay your first drop flat before lifting it to the wall. It confirms length, repeat, and orientation before any glue touches the paper.

Match your drops on the ground, not on the wall.
Line up successive drops side-by-side on the floor to confirm Raccord du motifs align cleanly. Correcting a mismatch on the wall is ten times harder.

Number your drops in hanging commande.
Mark the back of every drop with its sequence number and a top-arrow. This prevents reversed panels, lost motif flow, and grasscloth shade jumps.

Roll the adhesive onto the wall — and keep the mix tight.
Apply paste to the wall with a roller. Add a maximum of 1 ounce of water to the rolling pan to improve spread without thinning the bond.

Glue one sheet at a time — never the whole wall.
Paste only the section you're about to hang. Adhesive that dries before the paper goes up is the single most common cause of seam lift and bubbles.

Hang over light fixtures and gaps, then cut after.
Cover outlets, sconces, and openings with the full drop. Trim the cutouts once the paper is set — the motif stays continuous and the edges stay clean.

- Do I really need to leave a 1-inch overhang at the top and bottom? +
- Yes. Ceilings and baseboards are rarely perfectly level, and walls settle over time. A 1-inch overhang at both the top and bottom of each drop gives the installer pièce to trim cleanly to the actual ceiling and baseboard line — without an overhang you risk a visible gap at the cap.
- Should I Encollage du mur or Encollage du papier? +
- It depends on the Support of the papier peint. Non-woven papier peint are encollage du mur and dimensionally stable. Paper-backed vinyls require pasting the paper and a manufacturer-specified booking time. Grasscloth, silk, and fabric-backed papers require a clear, non-staining adhesive applied to the wall only.
- Why hang one sheet at a time instead of pasting the full wall? +
- Adhesive that dries before the paper is placed loses tack at the seams and corners. Pasting only the section you are about to hang keeps the bond consistent across every drop and is the single most effective way to prevent seam lift and bubbling.
- How do I deal with outlets, sconces, and light fixtures? +
- Power down the circuit, remove cover plates, and hang the papier peint continuously over the opening. Once the drop is set and smoothed, cut the opening out with a fresh blade. This keeps the motif continuous and the edges crisp.
- Do I need to prime the wall before installing papier peint? +
- Yes. Use a papier peint-specific primer — standard latex paint is not a suitable Support. Patch and sand to a Level 4 finish for textured papers and Level 5 for smooth, reflective, or silk papier peint. Dark walls require a tinted primer when installing light-colored papier peint.

Essential Surface Preparation
To achieve a gallery-quality finish, walls must be meticulously prepared:
- · Cleanliness: Surfaces must be smooth, clean, and free of loose paint or residual adhesives.
- · Finish Level: Patch and sand to a Level 4 finish for textured papers, and a Level 5 finish for smooth, reflective, or silk papier peint.
- · Priming: Use only papier peint-specific primers. Standard latex paint is not a suitable Support.
- · Curing: New drywall and plaster must be fully cured; plaster requires pH testing before application.
- · Environment: Bathrooms and kitchens require a professional moisture assessment prior to installation.
Adhesive & Method Notes
Adhesive selection is critical. It must match both the papier peint Support and the wall primer. Heavy Matières like grasscloth and silk require clear, high-tack, non-staining formulas. Vinyl papier peint require vinyl-over-vinyl adhesive for any overlaps. Substituting a "general purpose" adhesive is the leading cause of failed installations.
